okay, so i started listening to yo la tengo in july and their music caught me off guard. i’ve listened to plenty of music with experimentation but yo la tengo are able to execute it with such poise. they’re able to bake a delicious cake with an array of ingredients—noise, bossa-nova, indie, etc, etc. their music is crafted carefully and it shows. this song, “green arrow,” is one of my favorites off their 1997 I Can Hear the Heart Beating as One. ”green arrow” is simple, made up of slide guitar, a bass line, a shaker and, of course, crickets. there’s no other sounds i’ve heard to conjure such feeling. i’ve never experienced overwhelming emotion with such simplicity. honestly, this song makes me misty.
